More than 2,400 pounds of debris from discarded tires to lumber, bottles and other forms of trash – not counting the 2,000-pound refrigeration box that will require some heavy equipment for removal – was cleared from nine sites during the Earth Day cleanup sponsored by the Buckeye Brook Coalition. The 70 volunteers, including the Boy Scouts pictured here, were dispatched to the locations from the Knights of Columbus Hall parking lot Saturday. Plans were for the teams to return on Sunday, but that was a “wash out,” reports coalition president Paul Earnshaw. Earnshaw estimated it took 35 scouts about two hours to haul 1,000 pounds of planks and other construction material from a kids’ hangout and brook dam deep in the woods. Crews also cleaned sites in Conimicut and Warwick Neck.
